THE CITY OF JOONDALUP COUNCIL OCTOBER ELECTION IS UNDERWAY with seven candidates nominated in North-Central Ward which includes Connolly. The candidates in the order they appear on the ballot paper are; Juliette Reay, Rob Johnson, Trona Young, Christina Costigan, Simon Walker, Brogan Murphy, and Nige Jones. Profiles of the candidates are on the City of Joondalup website under “Council Elections”. Ballot paper delivery to electors by post starts 30 September. Ballot papers must be returned by 6 pm on 19 October so additional time needs to be considered to ensure delivery by Australia Post. On election day the packages can be personally delivered to the Returning Officer in the Joondalup Civic Centre between 8 am and 6 pm. THE NEXT CONNOLLY RESIDENTS’ Association Monthly Meeting will be on 7 October 2019 at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre doors open at 7pm. At this meeting we have invited the seven candidates to do short presentations promoting themselves and there will be an opportunity for residents to ask questions. Historically, the returns have been poor with only about twenty five percent of eligible residents voting. All residents enrolled on the State Electoral Roll are automatically enrolled to vote. By representing residents in Local Government affairs, the role of the Councilors is important so residents should identify a candidate they believe can best perform the role and vote on the day. Connolly can make a difference, so the CRA encourages all eligible voters to cast their vote. DEVELOPMENT PLANS for the Connolly Shopping Centre are in progress with the City of Joondalup approving the concepts with minor amendments. The next stage is for the building plans to be approved. The principle format of the development is unchanged with the existing supermarket area being reconfigured to cater for a smaller shopping area, a childcare Centre and consulting rooms. The first activity is the repaving of the car park which should commence early October.. ENGAGEMENT WITH CITY OF JOONDALUP on the use of certain chemicals in public areas took place prior to the Council meeting on 17 September when statements were made by residents requesting Council to cease using glyphosate (Round up) because of a health risk to humans and animals. A petition was presented to Council and we will monitor developments on this matter.
